After Standard Chinese (Mandarin), Cantonese is probably the Chinese dialect group best known abroad. The name ‘Cantonese’ is a so-called exonym. This means that the name is used like this only in foreign countries, because in China itself the province ‘Canton’ is called Guangdong instead. This can be compared to the French word Allemagne for ‘Germany’. And so, ‘Cantonese’ is called Yue in Chinese.
Guangdong Province is located in the south of China and is the most populous with over 126 million inhabitants. It is home to the business metropolis of Shenzhen, for example, which is home to numerous international electronics manufacturers such as Huawei and Tencent. The Taiwanese company Foxconn also has over 300,000 employees in the Longhua district, which is even known as “iPhone City”. Cantonese dialects are also spoken in the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.
The Chinese languages are by no means mutually intelligible. While most native speakers of Cantonese also speak Mandarin, that does not mean a native speaker of Mandarin understands Cantonese. Since Chinese languages use characters for individual words, this can mean that speakers of different Chinese languages would read the same text completely differently.
Also, it should be noted that Mandarin and Cantonese are both tonal languages, so a difference in stress leads to a difference in the meaning of the word. However, Standard Chinese knows only four tones today, while Cantonese uses up to nine different tones. To understand what this means in practice, the poem “Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Cave” by linguist Chao Yuen Ren is a good example. The latter comprises only four tones and not nine.

A Statement of Comparability is an official document issued by the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen – ZAB). It assesses international higher education qualifications and ascertains the professional and academic legitimacy of candidates. This is intended to facilitate access to the German labor market and enable students to continue their studies in Germany. It is a comparative classification, but not a recognition.

Depending on the federal state, other recognition and advisory offices are responsible for recognizing the equivalence of your degrees, certificates or diplomas from China. On Anabin you can find information not only about relevant authorities, but also about advisory bodies without direct recognition competence. They can provide you with information on numerous issues relating to recognition in Germany.
An apostille (“海牙認證” or “海牙认证“) is an additional confirmation of authenticity of a foreign document. The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalization of Foreign Public Documents (Apostille Convention) is in effect between Germany and the People’s Republic of China only in the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao. Here, an apostille confirms the authenticity of the signature and, if applicable, the seal of the signatory, as well as their authority to issue the document.
The authorities of the country in which the document was issued are responsible for issuing them, i.e. German authorities for German documents and Chinese authorities for Chinese documents. An apostille consists of a fixed text and is affixed to the document itself or to a sheet attached to it. The Hague Convention does not apply to documents issued by diplomatic or consular representatives, nor to documents relating directly to commercial transactions or customs procedures.
The recognition of Chinese documents therefore proceeds differently depending on the Chinese province. Further information can be found on the information sheets of the German embassies in the People’s Republic of China.
The Consulate General in Chengdu is responsible for the provinces of Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and the direct-administrated municipality of Chongqing.
The Consulate General in Canton is responsible for the provinces of Hainan, Guangdong, Fujian and the autonomous area of the Zhuang nationality Guangxi.
The Consulate General in Shanghai is responsible for the provinces of Jiangsu, Anhui and Zhejiang as well as the direct-administrated municipality of Shanghai.
The Consulate General in Shenyang is responsible for the provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang.
The Consulate General in Hong Kong is responsible for the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao.
The embassy in Beijing is responsible for all other provinces.
