Frequently asked questions about interpreters at the registry office
Booking an interpreter for the registry office does not include written translations. If necessary, these are to be booked separately.
Interpreters travel a lot and good ones are often booked up weeks in advance. The fields of application of sworn interpreters are many and varied. Interpreters are used in court, at youth welfare offices, in prisons, by lawyers, psychiatrists, at MPUs, in hospitals and for international delegations throughout Germany.
Depending on the language and location, a sworn interpreter must be booked at least one week in advance to ensure that they will be available at the appointment. Our nationwide network of sworn interpreters for more than 50 languages ensures that we can always provide you with the right interpreter, wherever you are.
It is best to ask us in advance so that you do not have to postpone your appointment at the registry office.
The costs for the use of an interpreter are determined by the German Judicial Remuneration and Compensation Act (JVEG). More precisely, the conditions and settlement modalities are based on sections 5 to 9 JVEG. We will gladly arrange a fixed price offer with you.
Based on experience, the billing times for interpreting assignments at the registry office are regularly composed as follows:
Time to and from the registry office: around 1.5 hours
Travel expenses/distance allowance: up to 50 km each way. (Vehicle wear and tear, mileage, parking fees and expenses).
Waiting and appointment times at the registry office: around 1.5 hours

A wedding is a wonderful milestone in a couple’s life. In order to make a marriage legally binding, certain documents are required. Typically, the following documents are required:
- A true copy of the birth certificates of both partners,
- valid identity cards or passports,
- a certificate of eligibility for marriage, if one of the partners is not a German citizen,
- if applicable, divorce decrees or death certificates in case of previous marriages,
- as well as certified translations of your foreign documents made by a translator sworn-in by a court in Germany.
- Watch out: In most cases, translations from abroad are not accepted by registry offices in Germany.
- If one of the partners does not speak sufficient German, you will also need an interpreter who has been approved by a German court.

The cost of bringing in an interpreter may vary. Prices depend on the subject and scope of the topic. On average, you can expect a total of 2 to 3 hours, depending on travel time. The costs for this are approx. 290.00 to 490.00 Euro per appointment, depending on the language combination and the location, including VAT.
The booking includes the interpretation of the speech of the registrar for the bride and groom. If the speech is also to be interpreted for the guests, additional interpreting equipment may be required.
If the speech of a registrar or witness is very elaborate and contains many idioms and anecdotes, the interpreter needs the speech a few days before the ceremony to prepare it for interpreting.
German rhymes, proverbs and idioms will not work in many languages and cultures! The interpreter must first find meaningful phrases and proverbs that work in the foreign language and culture and still express the same thing. Colors can also have different connotations in some cultures. In Russia, for example, yellow flowers are taboo. Yellow represents infidelity and jealousy. That would look particularly bad in a wedding speech. This is where a professional interpreter can step in and culturally adapt the interpretation.
With proper preparation, a translator can adapt the texts so that they rhyme in the foreign language as well. For example, proverbs such as “to kill two birds with one stone” become “zwei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen” (meaning “to hit two flies with one flyswatter”).
A speech by the registrar or a witness to the marriage, which is to be interpreted professionally and completely for the guests, should definitely be submitted to the interpreter in advance. This is the only way to estimate how intensive the preparation will be and whether or not additional equipment such as a microphone, speakers, receivers with headphones, etc. will be needed for the guests.

When an interpreter is needed, many registrars agree to schedule same-day appointments back-to-back. In this case, you save the travelling cost of the interpreter for the second appointment. This regularly saves you between 100 and 200 euros.
