Tigrinya, like the Amharic language and Harari, belongs to the Ethio-Semitic languages. It is spoken primarily in Eritrea, where it is a de facto official language alongside Arabic and is spoken by about half the population. Also, many people speak the language Tigre, which is not to be confused with Tigrinya and is spoken mainly by the Tigre and the Beni Amir. There is no uniform standard Tigrinya. It is also spoken in northern Ethiopia, particularly in the Tigray region. Together with the global diaspora, the language has around 9 million speakers.
The script of Tigrinya is not uniform; the language is written using the Arabic or Latin script, depending on the region, as well as Ge’ez, a writing system also used by other languages in the region. Ge’ez originated from an older version of the Arabic script, but unlike it, it is written from left to right. They also have in common that mainly consonants are written. Vowels, on the other hand, are represented by small appendages to letters. For example, a small tick at the bottom left of the letter turns a “k” into a “ki”. On the surface, Ge’ez is reminiscent of the Armenian script, but linguistically there is almost no relationship.
The earliest known texts in Tigrinya date back to the 13th century and include local legal texts. In the 19th century, religious texts, in particular the Bible, started to be translated into Tigrinya, which promoted the development of written literature. During Italian colonial rule in Eritrea (1885–1941), numerous Italian words were adopted into Tigrinya, particularly in areas such as administration, technology, and gastronomy. Since the 1950s, loanwords from English and Arabic have also become increasingly common.

How can I have my certificates from Eritrea or Ethiopia recognized?
A Statement of Comparability is an official document issued by the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen – ZAB). It assesses international higher education qualifications and ascertains the professional and academic legitimacy of candidates. This is intended to facilitate access to the German labor market and enable students to continue their studies in Germany. It is a comparative classification, but not a recognition.

Where can I find the corresponding recognition and advisory office for foreign certificates?
Depending on the federal state, other recognition and advisory offices are responsible for recognizing the equivalence of your degrees, certificates or diplomas from Eritrea or Ethiopia. They can provide you with information on numerous issues relating to recognition in Germany.
Can Eritrean certificates be legalized?
Bangladesh is not part of the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalization of Foreign Public Documents (Apostille Convention).
It is not possible to legalize documents from Eritrea at this time. It is also not possible at present to verify the formal and content-related accuracy of documents through administrative assistance.

Can Ethiopian certificates be legalized?
Ethiopia is not part of the Hague Convention abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (Apostille Convention).
At the moment, Ethopian documents cannot be legalized. However, through an administrative assistance procedure, an authority that needs your documents can conduct a document verification.
The legalization of German documents is done by the Ethiopian Embassy in Berlin. However, this does not apply to civil status documents such as birth or marriage certificates.
